Aromatherapy Discs
Aromatherapy discs are small, fizzy tablets that release essential oils into the steam of your shower. They go by many names. You may see them called shower steamers, shower bombs, shower melts, or shower tablets, but they all describe the same thing. A compact disc you place on your shower floor that turns the next five minutes into a sensory ritual.
This guide walks through what aromatherapy discs are, how they work, what the different essential oil blends do, and how to pick the right one for the way you actually live.
What Are Aromatherapy Discs?
Aromatherapy discs are made with a base of baking soda and citric acid, blended with pure essential oils. When warm shower water hits them, they fizz gently and release the essential oils into the steam. You breathe in the fragrant vapor and your bathroom becomes a small, immediate spa.
The naming is a quirk of the category. Some brands call them aromatherapy discs, others call them shower steamers. The word “discs” emphasizes the shape and the inhalation experience. The word “steamers” emphasizes the activation method. Both refer to the same product, sold the same way.
At Onsen & Bloom, we use the term shower steamers for our products. If you are searching for aromatherapy discs, you are in the right place.
How Aromatherapy Discs Work
The science is simple. Essential oils are volatile compounds that evaporate easily when warmed. Hot shower water and steam create the warm, humid environment that releases the oils from the disc and carries them up into the air you breathe.
Once inhaled, the aromatic molecules pass through the nasal passages and connect to the part of the brain that processes scent and memory. That is why a specific smell can instantly shift your mood. Citrus oils tend to feel energizing. Lavender and chamomile tend to feel calming. Eucalyptus tends to feel clarifying.
An aromatherapy disc typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes in the shower, depending on how much water hits it directly. The scent itself can linger in your bathroom for another 20 to 30 minutes after you turn the water off.
The Three Onsen & Bloom Blends
We make three aromatherapy disc blends, each built around a different part of the day and a different mood.

How to Use Aromatherapy Discs
- Turn your shower on warm. Let the bathroom fill with steam.
- Place one aromatherapy disc on the shower floor, in a corner where it will receive splashes of water but not the direct stream. A soap dish or a bamboo tray works well.
- As the water activates the disc, it will fizz gently and release the essential oils into the steam.
- Breathe deeply. Let the scent fill the air for the rest of your shower.
- For a shorter shower, cut the disc in half. Each half lasts about half as long, so a 15-pack can stretch to 30 sessions if you prefer milder scent.
Aromatherapy Discs vs Bath Bombs vs Other Shower Products
The category of “scented things you put in water” can be confusing. Here is the short version of how aromatherapy discs sit next to the rest.
| Product | How it activates | Where you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Aromatherapy discs / shower steamers | Shower steam | On the shower floor, away from direct flow |
| Bath bombs | Submerged in a full bath | In the bathtub |
| Essential oil diffusers | Cold mist or candle warming | Anywhere indoors, no water needed |
| Shower tablets / melts | Shower steam | Same as aromatherapy discs, different brand naming |
If you are choosing between aromatherapy discs and bath bombs, the practical answer is this. Bath bombs need a full bath and a lot of water. Aromatherapy discs work in the shower you already take. For most people, that makes them easier to use daily.
Choosing Your First Aromatherapy Disc
If you are buying aromatherapy discs for the first time, a few options exist.
- Single blend pouch. A 15-pack of one scent. Best if you already know which mood you are after.
- Essentials Box (6-pack sampler). Two discs of each of the three blends. Best if you want to try all three before committing.
- The 3-Pack. A full 15-pack of each blend. Best if you want options across the whole day, every day.

Are aromatherapy discs the same as shower steamers?
Yes. Aromatherapy discs, shower steamers, shower bombs, shower tablets, and shower melts all describe the same product. The naming varies by brand but the function is identical.
How long does one aromatherapy disc last?
About 10 to 15 minutes of active fizzing in the shower. The scent itself lingers in the bathroom for another 20 to 30 minutes after you turn off the water.
Can I use aromatherapy discs every day?
Yes. Our discs are made with pure essential oils, are vegan, and are cruelty-free. They are designed for daily use as part of your morning or evening shower routine.
Do aromatherapy discs work in a bath?
They are designed for the shower, not the bath. Aromatherapy discs activate via steam, not full submersion. If you want a soak, look at bath bombs instead.
Can I use more than one disc at once?
You can, but the experience of a single disc is what we designed for. If you want a stronger scent, move the disc closer to the water flow. If you want a milder scent, place it further from the direct stream or use half a disc.
